Most free tools composite your subject onto a new background and flatten the result. That is fine if you already know what goes behind it. If you want to drop the clip into an edit, a motion graphic or a web page, you need the alpha channel preserved — the per-pixel transparency that tells whatever comes next which pixels are subject and which are nothing at all. Transparency Render always exports that channel, and shows you the checkerboard while you work so you can see exactly what will be transparent.
Getting a clean key
Three controls do the work, and they interact. Adjust them in order:
- Key colour. Use the eyedropper on the backdrop rather than guessing a hex value. Sample a mid-tone area, not the brightest hotspot or the darkest corner — the tool averages a small neighbourhood so a single noisy pixel will not throw it off.
- Similarity. Raise it until the background disappears completely. Push too far and it starts eating green-ish parts of your subject: skin in reflected light, blonde hair, anything olive or teal.
- Edge blend. A hard key leaves jagged, aliased edges. A little blend creates a soft ramp so hair and motion blur stay believable. Too much and the whole subject turns translucent.
- Despill. Green screens bounce green light onto everything near them. Despill pulls that cast back out of the edges of your subject. It is the difference between a key that looks composited and one that looks shot in place.
Judge the key while it moves
A still frame lies. Edges that look perfect when paused often crawl or flicker once the subject moves. Mark the trickiest few seconds with the in and out points, turn on Loop, and watch that section repeat while you adjust — motion is where a bad key gives itself away. Holding the Original button shows the untouched frame whenever you want to check what was really there.
What helps before you ever open the tool
No keyer can rescue footage that fights it. Light the screen evenly and separately from your subject; a screen with hotspots and shadows is several different greens, and a single key colour cannot catch them all. Keep your subject a good distance in front of the screen to cut spill and shadow. Shoot at the highest quality your camera allows — heavy compression smears colour detail exactly where the edges are, and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling means the colour information is already at half resolution before you start.
Nothing is uploaded. Your footage is decoded, keyed and re-encoded on your own machine. There is no server, no queue, no account and no watermark — which also means no limit imposed by someone else's storage bill.
Blue screens and other colours
Green is conventional because digital sensors capture more green detail than red or blue, but nothing here is green-specific. Pick any flat backdrop colour and it will key; automatic despill covers both green and blue screens, which are the two that bounce a visible cast.
Then what?
Once the key looks right, the format you export decides whether the transparency survives. WebM with an alpha channel is the answer for the web, and ProRes 4444 for an editing timeline.
